Abstract
This study examined the impact of GPT-4 on human learning in high school math classes through a field experiment. Two GPT-based tutors were deployed: a standard ChatGPT interface (GPT Base) and one with pedagogical safeguards (GPT Tutor). Access to GPT-4 significantly improved performance during use, but when access was removed, students performed worse than those who never had access --- meaning GPT-4 can harm educational outcomes.
